Bane is a member of the Draconis Horribillus, commonly called Monstrosities.

An impressive amount of genetic mixing and resplicing by genetic scientists created the first, feral dragons by mistake; a side project of the Hoven Augment experiments that created the Underground, and their DNA was used to birth Flare Wingspan, and the rest of the Draconis breeds.
Phoenixes were another such example, however their random evolutionary leap into their flame-resistant plumage and incredibly high body heat was unforeseen by the scientists.
A mixture of the two creatures' DNA, blended with human DNA, created the powerful Monstrosity. Already large, many, MANY times stronger than humans and with speed and reflexes unimaginable, a good deal of their Armadillo predecessor's physiology shows through, giving them a strong, almost unbreakable natural armour on roughly 75% of their body. Their creator, late Dr. Ulysses Farce, then added an extra kick to their future distrusted species by introducing Xenotech to their bodies. Xenotech, when activated by the hosts' distress, anger, fear, or even worry in one case, causes their entire body to go under a metamorphosis. They generally become larger, immensely stronger, and their natural plating becomes almost impregnable; on top of this, their higher reasoning is overruled by the Xenotech, and they generally become violent brutes of nearly infinite destructive capability.

Bane, however, is a strange breakthrough in Xenotech. He seems to have a natural immunity to its mind-corrupting effects and therefore is always in complete control of himself.
They, by and large, are not a very trusted species. Even fellow Undergrounders have been known to deny a job, hotel room, even a meal at a restaurant because they are so different, seen as freaks. As a result, they're a very antisocial species; not distrusting, but with little faith in the world or themselves.
