Olympic National Park is a sprawling 3,733.8 km^2 parkland preserving the heart of Washington State's Olympic Peninsula. These include three unique ecosystems, ranging from the glaciated and snow-capped peaks of the Olympic Mountains, up to 2,428 m high, as well as the massive temperate rainforests on the Western face of the mountain range created by the wettest conditions in the continental United States, and finally the coastal beaches and rock formations of the Pacific coast. The park is best known for the Hoh Rainforest, one of the largest temperate rainforests in the country known for its large, moss-covered trees.
Olympic is a beautiful diverse park, and both times I visited I spent days wandering around its expanse. In truth I had difficulty deciding what scene to choose for this postcard, ranging from clear-blue lakes to alpine mountains to sprawling waterfalls. The scene I finally chose to depict is Ruby Beach, a popular beach known for its ruby-like (garnet) stones found in the sands, as well as its large seastacks constantly pounded by large waves. The big island offshore a few kilometers has a lighthouse, and nearby beaches have large tidepools, altogether creating a wide and dramatic tableau. However what most impressed me about Ruby Beach were the massive piles of driftwood half buried in the sand, made from gigantic trees meters in width toppled in storms. Walking on them made you feel small and insignificant.
