So just yesterday Mayhem's creator and owner, formerly known as Renard Queenston and now as Emma Essex, released new Mayhem album. With it came new official design for the character, which you can see here on the left. Of course I just couldn't miss opportunity to draw "classic" Mayhem along with new one.
What can I say about the new design? It's obvious which one I prefer. Not just old thicc Mayhem appeals to me more, her design is just objectively better by virtue of being easily identifiable as "that shark named Mayhem". New Mayhem is just... not unique? That being said, I don't exactly dislike the new design, it can work in specific context. It's pefectly possible that Mayhem we know and love looked like this when she was younger, before the glow-up.
So which one you like more? Thicc or sticc? Sharktits or no sharktits?

Personally i prefer thicc Mayhem. It's how I've known her as since being introduced to lapfox trax about 2011-12. She's always struck me as the pop idle of the group, where Mischief was always the adorable goob.
I don't think there's anything wrong with sticc Mayhem on her own, but for me its that Halley doesn't do any lore or story stuff and there's no explanation about it. At most we had Shark Attack with what there was in that game. It'd be cool if it was an accurate representation of her at a younger age.
But I agree, the old design was easy to identify her for a decade but the new design is just /bland/
But on a side topic, I've always been left curios why we've not seen pretty much anything of the black and red shark from Shark Attack.

I just now found out that Mischief went through a redesign as well.

Hmm...even her eyes are different. The new design is fine, though I definitely lean towards the old. Thick and thin isn't important to me in this case, but the old design: green eyes, red hair, headphones, midriff-bearing vest; that's how I've always known her, and it's how I like her; I see no need for that to change.
The new design just doesn't fit the word 'Mayhem'. The old design looks like she takes no prisoners and would absolutely hijack a gig if she wanted to, possibly doing something illegal in the process.
The new design looks like she makes minimum wage at the local arcade.
More than that, I think desexualising her to this extent is simply a bad marketing move, both for old fans and new. She looks she could just be any old shark OC on this site, it's so generic.

I know, and I didn't plan to change anything about how I draw Mayhem, it just seems pointlessly cruel to the fanbase. "Hey remember the thing you liked? I destroyed it! It's gone and not coming back!"
Honestly, simple retcon would be much better. Not to mention the fact that Emma has dozens of characters and just creating another one wouldn't hurt. But if it was done with trolling in mind... well done Emma, well done.

emma stated herself that it was a matter of making the character more comfortable to use. she was uncomfortable with the fact that mayhem was literally ONLY known as "big booby shark" and so she redesigned the character to be one that she could actually identify with again. its entirely understandable how and why decisions like that might be upsetting to the fanbase but ultimately these characters are intended to represent emma and be a way for her to express herself. no trolling there, i wouldnt think
If that were the case, just retire Mayhem and make a new shark. It would be less of a middle finger to the fans.
Also, it's not the fanbase's fault Mayhem gained he reputation when one of her albums is literally called Sharktits. Emma did that to Mayhem, not the fans.

well, i mean, you also have to think about the fact that sharktits was an album released in 2009. people change a lot over 13 years, it turns out! emma is allowed to do whatever she wants with her designs, really, so... not sure why its considered a "middle finger to the fans" when she is literally just making it so that she is more comfortable using her own characters. i genuinely dont understand that perspective
Too be fair, you do draw Mayhem subtly thicc compared to most official art of her. (pleasantly so, and that's coming from someone who prefers slender/lithe figures)
Mayhem 2.0 at least shares enough traits to be recognizable as the character, the design captures the general spirit and I guess that's the most important thing but it'll always be overshadowed by the classic design for me. The original Mayhem is just far too distinctive and unique.
