The reason onions hurt your eyes is because they release a gas that is attracted to moisture and the eyes happen to be very moist. I hear leave a wet paper towel nearby while cutting helps or cutting off the root last. Though, I have not found much success in either. Personally, I find cutting near an open window helps a lot. One other method I heard that may work is lighting a candle nearby, though I have yet to test that. You could also try freezing the onion a little first, I found that lowers the amount of gas released.
