(DA COMMISSION) Obscure Cartoon Characters
Commission for a friend on DeviantART I wanted to share here. :D
For this commission, he wanted me to draw some of the obscure cartoon characters that proved as inspiration for some of his own characters that I've drawn for him in some of his previous commissions. :D
From left to right, we have:
- Yehudi the Chameleon from the 1944 wartime short 'Camouflage', which was directed by Frank Thomas (one of Disney's Nine Old Men) for the First Motion Pictures Unit. https://archive.org/details/Camouflage1944
- Hay-Dy La Mare from the Bob Clampett short 'It's A Grand Old Nag' - Clampett directed a single short for Republic Pictures that was going to be the first in a series featuring a character named Charlie Horse which was cancelled. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-zlrYU9PFU
- The titular character of the 1948 version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, which was directed by Max Fleischer for the Jam Handy corporation. (And I honestly prefer this short to the Rankin Bass one ^^; - he's easily the most well known out of these characters, but the short here isn't watched as much as the 60s Rankin Bass one or the 90s GoodTimes one to my knowledge so I feel he could count :) ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN0g5lLPsU4
- Corny Crow from the Animaland series, a short series of British shorts directed by Disney director David Hand - it had a parody nature documentaries and some shorts involving a squirrel named Ginger Nutt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d5um4Ht3hM
- The titular character of the short 'Hamilton the Musical Elephant' from 1961. Another piece of British animation, this was produced by Halas and Batchelor (the studio behind the 1954 Animal Farm film). https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3ssazh
To prepare for drawing this commission, I watched all of these shorts, and while there are some bad stereotypes in the first two, and I didn't care much for the 'It's A Grand Old Nag' short (just because I found the main character Charlie Horse to be pretty unlikeable ^^; ), I did enjoy the others, especially the Hamilton one which I found to be really adorable. :aww: If you get a chance to check them out, I recommend checking them out at least once. :) It was also fun to draw some more obscure cartoon characters. :D
