Our consciousness is conditioned to look outside. When we look inside, we evolve as consciousness. We develop a sense for the unknown and the mysterious. Mystics are often more silent and less active than worldly people because they have transcended their ego and the conditioned self. The conditioned self is chattering and commenting a lot and consists of all the things which humans usually think about, like desires, worries, memories, projects, media... That is a plane of consciousness where a lot of stuff is happening that's created by the mind. But there are also many more planes of consciousness. When we look inside and stop to cooperate with our ego, we kill our conditioned self. We crucify our ego and are resurrected as a new human. That is illumination.
