It's a book by Norton Juster, first published in 1961. It's about a bored, depressed young boy named Milo who thinks the entire world seems pointless and dull. Then one day, he finds a mysterious tollbooth in his bedroom...
It's a clever, fun, and sometimes touching story.
There was a film adaptation (By Chuck Jones, no less) but neither he nor the author thought it panned out properly. The movie is mostly worth watching for the novelty that pretty much all the top voice talent in animation at the time contributed a character voice or two.
The book is worth reading anytime.
