When I sketched in the bomberman it looked like something else that I couldn't quite place, but it made me think of Math Blaster so I added that as well.
I eventually realized I was thinking of the robots from nes Lode Runner, which have a shared origin with bomberman, so it works out.

I thought about that but as far as I can tell even the earliest outside game artwork shows the Dig Dug protagonist with a mouth, whereas the math blaster was not indicated to have one until some time after the original game's release. Though possibly on the box of the early 1990s one I played, but blaster continued to mutate in more mundane-ifying ways beyond that point, evidently.
