Sometime ago, while checking the TLG wiki I read that Sahasi was Surak's brother and assumed this was canon (spoilers: it's not) but for me, this made perfect sense and became part of my TLK/TLG universe.

Sahasi and Surak represent everything Mufasa and Scar could have been.
Ever since they were cubs, the two brothers were each other's best friend, and throughout their lives, they helped, supported and offered advice whenever the other needed it. Surak loved playfighting with his brother from a young age, while dozing off during royal lessons with their mother, Queen Janna. However, as he entered adolescence, Surak became more and more aware of how incredibly demanding, complex and exhausting being a ruler could be, so he was more than content (and relieved) with his position as the future leader of the Night Guard, a duty he considered far easier to perform. He didn't envy Sahasi's destiny of following in their mother's pawprints, but unlike him, Sahasi was much more suited for that role; being patient, understanding, empathic, clever and firm when he had to. Surak admired his brother for this, while Sahasi admired him for his physical prowess and bravery, knowing that the Night Guard was always the first line of defense of the pride, and that his brother could be putting his life at risk everytime the Night Guard went into action.
The two brothers understood that their roles were equally important and needed, and that each of them was the best choice for their future roles. As long as they worked together, each brother had the confidence to do what was expected of them.
And then, Sahashi and his mate died unexpectedly.
They weren't King and Queen yet, but with an aged Queen Janna and two infant cubs left behind, Surak had to step forward. At least, that's what the majority of the pride thought, but not Surak himself. Despite attending the royal lessons from a young age, he wasn't as prepared as Sahasi had been for the throne, and the Night Guard still needed him. He couldn't possibly fulfill both roles either. He was simply not prepared.
Janna knew better than anyone else how heavy the royal crown could be even upon experienced shoulders, and when Surak voiced his concerns, Janna respected his feelings. She wouldn't force her son to do something he admitted he was ill-prepared, and a young, strong lion like him was definitely more useful in the Night Guard than at the Tree of Life after all. Thus, Janna decided not to abdicate on her younger son; she would remain as Queen as long as she could, while her oldest grankid, Rani, would remain next in line of the succession, skipping Surak entirely per his own wishes.
However, this time they decided to do something slightly different: both Rani and Baliyo would be educated as future rulers and as future leaders of the Guard, so none of them would feel as ill-prepared as Surak did after Sahasi's passing.
History would not repeat itself.
