TUNIC Narrative Guide - Act 3, Part 4: The Great Cataclys...
Summary: Join the Ruin Seeker (that's our protagonist fox!) on his journey through a strange and vaguely familiar land. His inner thoughts are laid bare as we explore the unknown. Each step brings new mysteries to solve, new challenges to face. - This story is intended as a companion piece to the video game TUNIC, but can also function as a guide if you are stuck or a teaser to get you interested.
We have entered the third act of the game, and the game has now taken a big tonal shift. If you plan to experience the game for yourself, please use Act 1 as your teaser, and only read through if you have experience with the game or need help getting past something you are stuck on. TUNIC is a game of discovery, and I would hate to take that joy away from anyone.
I zip quickly past the central goddess altar, across the roof of the Old House, and climb down the ladder. A short prayer at the telepad brings me into the other realm. From within, I'm able to realize just how badly the corruption has touched this place. Dark void energies spill out from the Ruined Atoll portal, and the Quarry portal is absolutely buried in the stuff.
I look under the stairs. The path to the Rooted Ziggurat seems to be untouched, but I cannot reach it to explore. The pathways to the Library and the Eastern Vault are available, and the pad that I have yet to bring online is still functional. I think that one is for the West Garden.
Climbing the stairs, continuing to survey the extent of this damage, I reach the goddess's prison. My offerings still reside here, if nothing else. Back in the central chamber, I poke my snout into the middle portal. Immediately I'm attacked by the matron fox, her blade scraping by where I just was. I give a halfhearted attempt at wounding her, and while her attacks are easier to evade, my blows have seemingly no effect.
In mere moments, I fall to the greatsword, and once again I am in the Overworld. This time, at least, I'm not sent to the sandy beach, and the world hasn't become even more corrupted as a result. Perhaps what happened isn't her fault. She never left that chamber. Still, the timing...
Returning to the teleporter and the other world, I begin to look around for this pathway to East Forest. I see a broken walkway to the right, and I pop across to investigate. A bit further, another walkway, tucked behind a scar of corruption. The next portion of the walkway appears to be out of reach, but as I will myself forward, my feet find solid ground amidst the ethereal plane, and I step across the open gap without falling into the abyss.
Through the teleporter that awaits me, I discover that it is, in fact, the path to East Forest. With narrow-minded focus, I charge ahead towards the gravesite. I am laid upon by a pair of red beams, and through the speedy blur I recognize the forest is filled with Scavengers. I ignore them. I zip ahead to the grave.
Once there, I hold out my shield and defend myself against the scattered assault. A grenadier lurks at the edge, and I grip him over with a void tentacle thrash. It takes a few extra blows, but I dispatch him. A rifle-wielder takes shots at me from beyond my vision. My shield keeps me safe, and during the next time she reloads, I pray at the grave, carrying me forward to the ghostly realm.
I approach the pristine beast's tooth, placed amidst the circle lining the statue of the great hero. With a swirl, the wisps restore to me my strength. Power flows through me, and I feel like I can take on the world. My wisdom tells me that no, I cannot. I need the other relics. Leaving the site, I pass under the archway and pull the first of two gun-carrying scavengers down to me. Two strikes and she falls, then repeat. Much better.
Knowing that I'm done here, I zip-zip myself back to the telepad, and zip-zip myself back to the central part of the hub. Next on my list is Eastern Vault. Into the teleporter I go and I appear near the vault itself. I climb the stairs to see if the foxes have anything useful to share. Most are silent, but one is crying about the Siege Engine. I make a point to avoid saying that I blew it up.
I head outside the vault and spot another fox leaning against the side of a tunnel. What she says holds a touch of concern, but otherwise all I can make out is that it's about The Hero's Grave. That's this way, hi, excuse me. I watch her with a bit of caution as I run through the rest of the tunnel.
What awaits me catches me off guard. I see puddles of dark void energy, but out of them crawl brightlings. Unprepared for such a menace, I run back towards the ghostly fox and she gives me a look that reeks of "I told you so." With a glower, I ready my Gun and stomp off towards the grave a second time.
When the first one crawls out, I open fire. The oil jug assists me in cleaving its large form, and I follow with a second blast. My mana being rather limited, I finish the four micro-brightlings with my sword and use their energy to restore my spirit. Further ahead I'm faced with two large ones. This time, I rely on my teleportation to keep my distance, and when my mana runs empty, I dash through them to collect just that little bit more to keep the Gun functional.
The whole process is simple enough, and the way remains clear as I approach the grave. On the other side, I collect the perfect flower bundle, and wisps grant me the return of my health. Three down, half done.
Once outside, I decide to explore just a little before I return. Across the gap where the large drawbridge one laid, I am suddenly surrounded by severe corrosion of reality. The forest is being consumed by the void energy, and as I walk down the narrow path available to me, I discover at least part of what is heavily contributing to the cause.
The obelisk, first of the region, has exploded. The conduit path has been severed, and its energy billows out into the surrounding environment. The pond is a sea of black, and my eyes sting from staring at the bright light in this dark forest. I may not know the why, but I now know the what. Something happened to the obelisks, to the power fluid, that caused this disaster. Whether it's The Heir that channeled an overload to them, or the result of the Scavengers' reckless destruction, the world is crumbling.
Discovery: A massive explosion has sundered the land, with many sources of otherworldly energy erupting and leaving scars across reality.
With a hard swallow, I return to the golden teleporter and check my notes for where to go next. The next most useful is probably restoring my defense. I set out from town towards the West Garden, unsure of how to reach it. I pull myself across the river to a tuning fork and speak with the fox staring out into the distance. With a fearful tone, he mentions the Gardens.
To the north, I note a pile of dark crystal piled where the ladder used to be. Following the path around, I am uncertain of how to make it down. Back by the fearful fox, I lasso a metal pole down amidst the sands, looking for a way into the pillar of purple held under the belltower. Along the way around, I spot a chest across a broken bridge. It only holds a small bit of treasure, but the path continues and it's obviously a new one.
Success! A back way into the Garden. I look through the spyglass and I can see the Hero's Grave awaiting me. With the wooden bridges all gone, however, I find the once-familiar place to be a dreadful maze of rocky footholds. Careful to not slip into the water, I take each dash with caution.
Above the workshop that held the Magic Dagger, there's a void-tinged Chompingnom. I stare him down, and notice a page out of the corner of my eye. With an attempt to reach it that's met with failure, I shrug and instead find a path off the small island to the south. It leads slowly upwards and around to the goddess altar, as well as an obelisk that I was unable to reach previously.
Zipping around, I make it onto the staircase and climb up to pray. This should have activated the nearby telepad, but I cannot reach it from here. Something for later, if I care. On my way out, I spot a grouping of three flowers. I toss a bomb into the corner and nothing happens. I'm about to leave when I notice a suspicious square pattern. With a firm press, a switch is triggered and the door falls away. Inside, a Golden Coin.
Recovering with a rest at the checkpoint, I continue my efforts to find a way through. I find some more dark energy spilled into the water. I don't recall any obelisks here, so maybe there was something underneath the water that leaked out. I fend off a random void-Chomp and he barely puts up a fight now that my strength has returned, making me glad that I recovered that first.
I continue to circle around the back side, looking for a good place to cut across. I eventually find one, and it leads me to a fox sitting and staring at the fallen Knight. She comments about it being dead while picking at the flowers nearby. I recall being in awe of the fallen construct when I first came through, still unprepared for the intensity I would soon face.
Further, another void-Chomp stands between me and familiar ground. From here, I know my way. Walking the wide path, I circle around, past altar and mysterious door, coming to the large staircase before the Hero's Grave. Inside, a meticulously carved fox waits for me. With my touch my defense is restored, leaving me with only two objectives remaining.
From here, I have a dawning realization that I have to retrace my steps to exit from this area. The telepad can't be reached, and the way nearby is unable to be crossed. I rush through as quick as I can, stopping twice to catch my breath. I clamber up with my Magic Orb, zip across the river, and once back at the central golden square I consider my next stop.
I may as well hit the Library while I'm here. With a prayer, I pop into the other realm and then head through the south pad. While darker, the inside of the library study is much as it previously was. The corruption seeping into every corner of the land far below has held little influence on this place. I start zipping through the study to head below when a voice calls out to me.
Losing my focus, I walk clean into a table, banging my head on its edge. There, in the large chair, is the Librarian himself. He seems to want to talk to me, but I can't understand a lick of what he's saying. He prattles on and on, something about The Heir, something about defeat, something about the Holy Cross... Sounds to me like he's confirming what I already know. Beat The Heir, claim the Holy Cross. I scoff as him, returning the arrogance he seems to hold so dearly.
A bit of random treasure lines a ledge to the south. I zip across and collect it, and then climb down the mound of books and down the long ladder. Once below I realize I was wrong. The corruption reaches even here. Perhaps it stems from the items he pilfered from below. There was one obelisk he brought up that I saw, but who knows what else he had stashed away.
On the next floor, I come to where the Hero's Grave should be. To my dismay, it's covered in void-matter. Walking over to inspect it, I rouse a nearby statue from its slumber. When I first came here, it looked as though it could come alive. It seems I was correct in feeling that way. The large fox-knight holds a shield much like the Envoy. There's an easy trick to dealing with shield-carriers. I run back up the long staircase, dodging a hefty swing. At the top, I swap my Magic Orb for the Magic Dagger, grinning with mischief, and ready to re-engage.
Down the stairs, another zip to dodge. I freeze it in place and land a full sword combo against its frame. As soon as it breaks free, I repeat this. Then once more. With zero attempted swings, it falls to the ground unmoving. My magic is drained, but it was a flawless victory. Still, the corruption remains on the grave.
My memory tingles, recalling another on the other side. I restore myself with two mana fruits and carefully approach the other Envoy Knight. After it stirs, but before it can strike out, I freeze the suit of armor in its place. My strategy repeats with perfect execution, and when it falls silent, the corruption binding the Hero's Grave fades away.
On the other side, I touch the cluster of gigantic and beautiful mushrooms. They disperse into wisps and my mana is restored. Sure, not much is regained, but every bit helps. My last stop, as I zip my way out of the Library, is the Monastery within the Quarry. I glare at the Librarian as I pass by and he simply shakes his head at me.
Once in the Overworld, return to the first goddess altar, climb the stone ladder, and zip along the back. The ladder here remains and I let out a sigh of relief. Racing across the top edge of the Overworld with my tracks a blur, I swap back to the Magic Orb and grip onto the hook point. Down the three ladders, I try to pop through the gate. This fails, so I grip the pole below and climb back up.
A solid wall of void energy bars my way. Of course, I should have expected this. That's why the booklet was talking about the Door in the Mountains. I need to take that side path at the top in order to get there. With my feet hurting from all of this travelling, I let out a long groan and dash back up the cliffside. Before too long, I'm at the long stairway ascending to the cold and bitter mountain.
At last, a place untouched by the devastation. Sure, there was almost nothing here to begin with, but it still makes me feel a bit better. Once at the top, my body gives a shiver and my nose sniffles. Best not linger too long and find out if ghosts can get sick. Down the hidden path, onto the roof of the Monastery, the new sights here leave me breathless.

Author's Notes: If you trace the conduits to their source, you end up underneath the Western Belltower. That pillar glows especially bright, and where it goes from there is uncertain. It may be that it stretches into the Sacred Temple, and underneath the prison pit. It may be that it connects from there with that other dimension. Or it could be that the fluid pumped from below is held within that chamber where it's distributed across the region.
From that pillar room under Western Belltower, the conduits radiate out in many directions. Atoll, Quarry, Eastern Vault, and even West Garden even though we interact with almost nothing there. The next of the explosions occur at the initial obelisks in each of those zones, or at least nearby. In quarry, things are so damaged that a massive collapse occurs, or because it's below sea level the extra energy floods out from the veins of the energy system.
Atoll is completely closed off to us and the Library, despite being in the air, is affected as well. That's possibly due to something the Librarian himself did as part of his research. Some residual effect that echoed above, perhaps. Inside the teleportation area, scars rip through the air, but the telepads for Atoll and Quarry are oozing with void matter. The one leading into Rooted Ziggurat is suspiciously clear, however.
In understanding the events of TUNIC, it's small details like that which should be considered. If the explosion can be tracked, if the flood of pureblood energy itself even has a reason, then the absence of something should also hold significance.
One small thing to note. If we had activated the Swamp obelisk before the catastrophe, there's a good chance that the region would have been sealed off to us. A similar statement applies to the West Garden and how that teleporter was inactive at the time.
The only detail that remains is to consider why. Was it something The Heir did directly, or was it a consequence of her removal from the system? Also, while I may have ended Boss Scavenger, she may not have actually been dead. She didn't provide any spirit or treasure. If she survived, perhaps she sabotaged something below that caused the overload.
This game is a masterpiece in perspective. As you play further, your scope changes. As you learn more, new meanings emerge. If I make it far enough to translate the Tunic, I'll see about putting some of these theories alongside the information hidden in text. Maybe there are answers yet to be found.
