Forgive me for constantly turning to movies, but this scene reminded me of one of the more memorable scenes in "Groundhog Day." Bill Murray's character is trying to keep an old man alive by buying him a good meal and the old man dies anyway.
But Bill's character tried, and that's what I remember.
