Think 11.6 million polygons is too many? (Don't worry, its just to build a displacement map from :3)
Comparison:
World of Warcraft character: 90-150 polygons
Crysis on highest settings: 200,000 Polygons
PS3 -total_ renderable on screen, I think about 1.5 million at any time. But it lags at that.
(The final will be around 40k)
