Commenting again. The books kinda messed me up as a kid/soured me on redwall a bit. These two books were so close to challenging the status quo, and then they just didn't.
Veil was a "vermin" raised by redwallers and he still turned out "evil." Though given how he was blatantly treated unfairly for being a ferret, it's hard to say if that was his actual nature, or him just snapping from the pressure. Nevermind how he sacrificed himself for his mother and he was still treated like scum in the end.
The otter in The Taggerung was a good species raised by vermin... Who deep down was never really that bad, and what bad he does doe doesn't count because he did it to other vermin and was ultimately good in the end.
Kid me was really bothered by these books because they implied whether or not a person is good is determined by the circumstance of their birth. And to be honest, I just find that to be a gross implication.
