Moving without seeing where I’m going
The flashing lights marking out the time
From Alpha to Omega, no sign of slowing
My reflection obscured by windows’ grime.
I’m sharing this car with myself alone
My memories, my feelings, and my pain
It is a road that I have always known
That beckons me onward, once again.
My phone hangs in my paw, its tale told
An ancient story that I know by heart
Seven printed words, austere and cold
Telling that two lives now should part.
I see my face, reflected in strobing lights
Imagination layers on the signs of age
Long busy days, long loveless nights
Moving freely about a spacious cage.
The phone sounds, and in white on black
A message appears . . . she wants me back.
