As of September 2022, I've been drawing online for 10 years! To reminisce, I'm going back to look at every character I created since I started in 2012.
And here we are at character #30, the last of the recapped characters, at least for now. I'm aware that there is a handful that I am not including, but none of them ever had a significant role past a character ref or two, or they were given away before I did anything substantial with them.
Sparrow, however, has much more than that.
At this point, I almost treat Sparrow more as a concept than I do an actual character. To me, "Sparrow" represents my characters as a whole and what I hope to achieve with them. I enlarged the canvas so I could fit as many versions of Sparrow as I could, but there are still many other versions of him/her in my galleries. Back when I first wanted to create a cohesive story with my characters, Sparrow was the first character I made. Any time I made a new plot, Sparrow was given a new design and a new purpose and he was set as the protagonist. But no matter what I did to his design, I couldn't get him to click. I have never been able to make a version of Sparrow I am satisfied with, perhaps because I've set my own standards so high. Despite wanting him to be the main character in many projects, I rarely ever drew him for anything outside of anything that wasn't cancelled and I hardly drew him at all when I started drawing fetish art, like with many characters I had before then. When I wrote Insight I had no intention of even having Sparrow in the story, because by that point he was essentially a dead character and I was ready to give up completely. At that time it was time for Emily to become my main character and for my plot to develop in a new direction.
However... despite all of that, I still find myself coming back to Sparrow. After a long absence I am once again finding myself redesigning him again. She is hardly the same character anymore, but I think that's my intention. Over the last two years I feel like I have gotten closer than ever to making my dreams a reality with my characters, and finally perfecting Sparrow's design into the character I always wanted her to be. It's still too early for me to talk more about my current plans or my dreams for the OCs I've been presenting lately, but Sparrow's evolution as a character and as a concept is definitely proof of the experiences I have had since I started on Deviantart a decade ago.
I can't imagine what I'll be doing in another 10 years from now, for all I know I won't even be drawing at that point. Even now I face doubts all the time that I shouldn't be doing any of this, or that my projects will continue to fail like they always have, and Sparrow and the rest of my characters will never catch on. But it's been 10 years and even though Sparrow's importance to my roster has fluctuated considerably, I still have her and I am more focused than ever. I feel like this next decade will be incredible no matter what happens and I cannot thank you all enough for being with me for as long as you have. Whether you recognize every single one of these 30 characters or you don't even recognize Endra, I sincerely appreciate your support and I hope you'll stay with me as I move closer to an obtainable dream.
