Ricardo "Rick" Hernandez is an anthropomorphic flamingo that served as a sailor in the 104th Composite Unit under the legendary Chanticleer Bluth. The son of two Cuban immigrants, he grew up in the then-growing town of Miami Beach, Floridart. His father, who became an air conditioner salesman upon moving to the region, taught Ricardo how to sell himself and be charismatic. After briefly serving in the Coast Guard during WWII, he decided to learn how to become a real estate agent, working for a decent-sized commercial real estate firm as tourism grew within the Miami metropolitan area. He also got into surfing just as that subculture was taking off. During this time, he heard about how several shell companies were buying up huge tracts of useless swampland near the small town of Orlando. Those shell companies were actually all owned by the Disney Corporation, which was planning to develop its weapons manufacturing and propaganda complex in the remote part of the state. Like many Cartoons, Rick followed the Battle of Cartoonia on the radio, especially listening in to reports of Mace Windu and the 407th Battalion destroying Disney's Floridart complex. After the Republic's victory, he would join the new mixed Cartoon and clone unit, the 104th. Also, like many Toons in the 104th, Rick grew out his pompadour and started wearing a neckerchief as a way to pay tribute to his CO Chanticleer.
After the war, realizing that the Miami area had been developed to its fullest extent, he decided to take a position in Monterey, Cartoonifornia to find a fresh market. That was where he met fellow veteran Jacob "Jake" Morris in spring of 1956. The two talked about their experiences during the war, and their shared loves of surfing, weightlifting, and rum-based drinks. After Rick made Jake the best and most authentic mojito he ever had in his life, the two entered into a romantic relationship.
Rick also likes dancing, and popular music. Though not the biggest fan of salsa, he does like Cuban rhythm and blues, and how some American rock artists are integrating that style into their songs.
