The short version essentially boils down to the notion that when you begin to actively think about doing something you normally do subconsciously, it becomes more difficult or near impossible to do. The Centipede's Dilemma is something of a fable where someone asks a centipede how they're able to coordinate their many, many legs to walk in a direction. The centipede has never thought about that before, and as soon as they start thinking about it, they can't figure out how to do it.
