This is the bulk of my wax working tools (a couple of the carving knives are missing). Two of my favorite tools are the long sticks at the top. Those are the two main build up tools for things like collars and other very fine/complicated pieces. The tools with the pale wood handles are carving knives....they are "wood carving" knives but they work for a lot of other materials. The tools with the thin, darker wood handles are/were clay tools. These are nice because I can use both ends without risking burning my hands. This is the problem with the two ended all metal wax tools (the remaining tools shown).
The thing at top left is my alcohol lamp.

Same here. I just went to Good Will to get spoons for melting larger amounts of wax (my mother was getting irate about me using the food spoons). I have seen dental picks and other equally odd things used...basically anything that can be heated safely in a flame.
Only using the "recommended" tools can get expensive. It seems like once something is branded as a specialty clay tool, the price goes up.
