Just a few quick projects that I wanted to wrap up before my schooling gets denser and forces me away from these projects. Mostly stuff that I wanted to make just to get it out of the way and I needed a new practice sling anyways so it works out.
Starting with the Knife
While I was out today testing the sling I stumbled across a junk pile with a lot of glass, took some of them and today just knapped this into a small glass knife that was hafted onto a tiny chunky stick I had sitting around for way too long. It was flaked with indirect percussion with a copper nail I found in the bulk aisle of a hardware store (bought it for 24 cents!). Mostly used the nail like a sort of punch to tap the edges of the knife and it worked pretty well! The knife is quite sharp and is perfectly able to cut meat, cord, and even some of the scrap leather I've had around. The blade is also a simple "Uniface" meaning it was flintknapped mostly on just one side, enough to give it an edge without doing a ton of shaping.
Glass is a material frequently scavenged and used by drekir, for Knives, projectile points, really most things you may want sharp. Most drekir flintknapping tends to not be too complicated and so seeing a simple uniface glass blade used in the hands of a local drek hunter is absolutely something that would be relatively common. Glass can be made into a useful sharp blade without too much skill. Sometimes glass is found in large chunks melted together over a century ago and sometimes intact scraps of broken glass are found and either way, it's pretty easy to work with after getting a basic understanding of knapping skills and tools.
and the sling
I've said this a lot, I like to sling stones and its been a hobby longer than the DragonScape has been a thing. My most recent sling finally gave out (it was a braided sisal sling). For this one I wanted to make a split leather pouch as I just got a hold of a bunch of leather scraps and cord. I just braided a release cord out of the more durable sisal with some rough knotting onto the pouch and the retaining cord is just a leather cord. I threw the sling today and it works great! It's longer than my previous one so accuracy is something im gonna have to get used to as it was hard to hit the targets I could normally hit easily but the sling itself throws pretty well.
Slings are a reasonably common weapon in the dragonscape amongst drekir, as its a lever it can make up for a lot of their weaknesses with arm strength and a lot of slinging styles, lengths, etc. work with drekir. Combined with the ease of making them and the variety of methods you can use to make them they are pretty easy weapons to make and, with a pretty steep learning curve, you can achieve some pretty good hunting level accuracy for hunting birds or land animals. They also work well for fighting too. Stones are of course the most common thing though clay, copper, or lead projectiles may appear from time to time.
Also working on an arrow throwing sling so stay tuned for that, may be a while.
Alright be well
