Along the parkway, here in Western North Carolina, there are lonely places, down in the hollows, in the cleared fields, or just off from the forest. This particular place is much like that, surrounded by life, there is a dead and decaying tree, surrounded by underbrush, ferns, flowers, and trees just behind it, all around it. Despite the distressing nature of this at first place, the reality is much more pleasing. Understanding this tree is nurturing life all around it, its slow decay giving food, offering shelter, and encouraging regrowth. This tree, simply put, is experiencing a life after that we may yet strive for.

I enjoy your thoughts about this tree as much as your beautiful picture of it; I love the stark, skeletal grey of the dead tree against the lush, living shades of green all around. It's true that this tree is experiencing a certain afterlife, and it's doing so with good grace.
I used to help Dad harvest wood from the surrounding forest for our winter supply, and Dad warned me when I was very young that a tree is the only living thing that isn't dangerous until after it dies. Don't climb or disturb a dead tree; a big piece of it -- or all of it -- can fall on you at any time.
