The normal DS slot is all that is required to use an 'R4DS' card. Just slip a micro-sd into it and you're good to go. No flashing or modding of your DS required.
Ah BUT I remember... they did attempt to prevent these with the DSi. I *very* briefly recall seeing they made new ones special for the DSi anyway... but I'd count on them fighting it with patches, repeatedly. :\
