How can you not remember whether or not you drew something?

It happens a lot on the convention floor when someone gives you a book to draw in and you find an "old" surprise there... but the difference is that they had my signature on it.... and I don't remember EVERYTHING I ever drew. I might have actually done it... it's just not clicking in this dysfunctional brain of mine...

Bless you! I've never been in that situation before, I seem to remember everything I've done (or recognise it quickly as mine) even from back when I was in primary school. I hope you clarify soon whether it's yours or not!

That happens to me all the time. You draw hundreds, maybe thousands of drawings, and you're bound to forget a few of them.

Hardly a year goes by without someone showing me something I did for them and I go "I drew THAT!??"

As far as I can tell, that is a near dead-ringer for your style. I too have loads of drawings I've forgotten about and don't recall them until I see them again.

Now a good question to ask is "was this done in a way I would've done it?" Getting all CSI on it might help jog your memory.

...if ONLY I had the fancy-shmancy CSI tech they use to figure this out...but you are correct that I could do something like this, and have, giving her serious mood and staging. I just wish the image was just a tad longer to reveal a signature..

If this were CSI, we could just scan it in and in seconds it could check it against its magic database of every furry image ever drawn. Then we'd trace the ink to the pen you drew it with and match your prints to the pen. Case solved!

I dunno Mitch, it's certainly got your stylistic feel to it (looking specifically at the crosshatching). But it also looks like it was cropped from a (much?) bigger piece.

I agree about the crop element of it... I have seen crosshatching like mine from other artists, like Freddie Anderson of Canada...

Nah, you have a very distinctive method of using hatching for shading and this looks like yours. There's some slight variations from your style in the placement of the ears and the body shape, but maybe that was because someone had given you a reference picture that you were drawing those variations from?

it was in late 90's. 99 I believe. after three pics he lost interest (and most possibly, time) inmym stuffs and I stopped. :) couldn't think up somethign worthy, anyway.

I just saw you found the original owner (or rather, eh found you). :) thinking about it, the nosetip itself would have thrown me off. also, I haven't seen too many inkings in this size off your hands before, so I couldn't have been sure...
but there is a vast collection of fuzzy art on my HD. it takes it almost two minutes to count 'em all. :)

Definitely your work, Mitch, the line-weights, hair-style, facial structure, eyes, they're all your style. If it's not yours, you been cloned.
I know what you're talking about though, I lose stuff all the time like that.

What gets me, sir, is that an old-school furart like me with an eye for this stuff couldn't remember doing the bloody thing in the first place and having the feeling that someone out there was "cloning" my style. On top of that, my style is not the "copying" prone type popular enough to induce such efforts: case in point, to this day I have seen NO example of anything I did in APAs or comics or even in FA that "Inspires" popular repetition in any quantity or media thereof. (THAT would make a case that I did do this...)

You know why? because people would loose money on INK! The amount of line work in your backgrounds is staggering and awesome at the same time. I wish i could draw HALF of your lines...I'd be the next Blotch!

Are you forgetting the blistering linework of one Eric Blumrich? Remember his scratchwork? I'd swear he could draw stripes on paper fibers...BUT... I have seen other artists "try" to copy his style....poorly. Not so much in my case.

Well, honestly, there are certain styles that are just plain hard to replicate, to "copy". I'd say it was a matter of how iconic a style was, how distinct and stripped-down to the basics it is. Bode, for instance. It's easy to draw like Bode, but there are nuances of his style that are just so distinctly his, you'd have a hard time getting it exactly right. Your style is very cartoon, and so by design it's very iconic.
As far as forgetting stuff...we're getting old, Mitch, it's gonna happen, we just gotta get used to it, revel in becoming dirty old men.

Someone once described my art as "cartoony", but I never really grasped the connotation of it until I read this book by a comic artist explaining what the illustrative meaning of graphic interpretation in relation to everything else... I think the book was called "Understanding Comics"; quite a read.

Scott McCloud. It's really pretty much the book if you want to understand comics and graphic-arts/design in general, he really summarizes the whole idea of how we see things, graphically, in the most concise and comprehensible manner yet.

In fact, I found this image somewhere a while back, loved it, didn't know who did it -- so I posted it on a TGFB source thread - in a few minutes, boom, "Beiro" - and now that I've seen more of your work, I'd have to say yes, definitely. There's a story about Picasso (supposed to be true) - guy goes to Picasso with one of his paintings, asks about it - Picasso tells him it's a fake. Now this guy is pretty damn sure it's real, so he goes to an art gallery owner friend of Picasso and tells him and shows him the painting - this guy's pretty damn sure too. So he takes one of his own Picassos to Picasso - Picasso says it's a fake. Guy says "No way, I watched you paint this one." Picasso says something like "Well, I fake Picassos all the time."

I think it's my very favorite picture that you don't remember doing. Definitely one of my favorite Zig Zag images ever.

Well... I'm no Picasso, and if I did this, I'm sure it wasn't intended to BE a fake, cuase' it looks too seriously put together to be dishonest...if that means anything...I dunno

It's an awesome piece of work -- ZigZag is lovely, and the graceful way her hair is swirling around her is wonderful. I just hope you can find who has the original and get a proper full high res scan of it -- you were totally in the zone when you did this one.

BTW... what was exactly that piece you discovered you searched to identify? I'm curious...

I'd bet the farm that is your work. As for the lack of signature-- it could simply be cropped off, or Photoshopped out for whatever reason.

Sometimes convewntions bring unpleasent surprizes of old art I'd forgotten about, but I can always instantly recognize my work.

I may have the same misentrapments when discovering old art (-Bondage Bob, for one...) but it nags me that I can't recall doing it. I should remember an art like this one......(Gahhh! )

Very good personality portrait of a younger ZigZag.

That does look like your art. Outline style. Emotion in the pose and facial expression (eyes & mouth). Crosshatching that almost looks too quick... yet precisely nails the 'softs' and 'hards' in the gray-tone design.

As has been said: maybe a sketchbook commission that has cropped edges (and cropped info)?

Sometimes, a picture that surprises you (like this) can be a reminder that you might be better than you remember you are. Consider it a gift to yourself.

It would be more agreeable if it were "a sign of diet- Alzheimer's" as a tangible explanation to all this mystery, but to the fact now that so many people believe it's mine cannot escape that conclusion... so, it's mine.

So maybe you could try drawing this picture without either looking at the original or trying to commit it to memory, and then compare the two!

Yep. You draw very distinctive eyes Mitch. That was one of the first things about your art that drew me to it. That pouty ,seductive expression is yours as well. No one I've ever seen does THAT expression as good as you.

Don't feel bad about not remembering though - you've produced hundreds, possibly even thousands of picts over the past two decades (remember, you were producing art when I first discovered fandom in 1990) so no real surprise that you don't remember all of them, heck, even I have the occasional "Oh yeah, I forgot about that one" moment when flipping through the stuff I've commissioned in the past 15 years.
