Only short compared to a rifle. And then you can load it with solid slugs (for range and massive impact), or miniature grenade shot (making it a little grenade launcher), or have some fun with Dragon's Breath rounds (giant cone of flaming magnesium).

Handguns aren't that good at distance, and depending on the choke and shot, a shotgun can outperform your average automatic.
Compared to a large number of rifles anything else becomes short range, given that the current record for longest range kill is out past a mile.
The range of your average shotgun is severely downplayed by most media, and with rifled slugs in good conditions it's possible to make a kill at out to 100 yards, or one football field.
Depending on the choke, 00 buck averages in the 25 yard arena.
Nearly any pistol on the market, unless heavily modified for hunting or long range shooting, is going to have a maximum effective range of about 50 yards, if you've got a lot of practice. The fact of the matter is a pistol is more oriented to close range work than a shotgun. And by close range, I mean point blank, under 10 yards, usually inside a building where a long arm isn't as useful.

I've been duckshooting with my uncle. Your average over and under shotgun has a lethal range of roughly 30 metres (32 yards). I shot a duck that was just outside this range, and I swear this was true, the duck took the hit to its side, shuddered in the air, lost perhaps a foot of height and kept right on flying away.
