Edit: color version here
A long-delayed version of
lazzyz's Nova, Mud Scout recruit. This rendition took many months of mentally thrashing out how to fit the uniform over her wings, when a few days ago I ran across this pic by dingbat. Things sped up from there, and although I didn't employ the exact same method, I did use the idea of magnets (the button-like things on the flap under the sleeve) to hold her sleeves around her wings.
With that problem solved, I progressed from a headshot sketch (not posted) to this refined pencil test which kind-of also addresses the issue of fitting the Mud Scout beret around her ears--namely perching it on the back of her head. Even though other renditions of this character leave her barefoot, I took creative license and fitted her with some Crocs flats (style name "Kaela"), rationalizing that she'd feel this molded shoe won't be harmed by repeated deep-mud encounters. (The fact that they probably won't stay on her feet hasn't been addressed. Chalk it up to Fridge Logic.)
As with the other test pics , this will be inked and colored once the details of my version of the character are deemed OK.
(I haven't yet restored my original workstation--I hooked the scanner to an old P-III laptop temporarily parked on my drawing table for digital art duties)

Memo to self - to add to the list of things no sane person should ever do.... going for a stroll in the 4ins of snow in their back garden in a pair of odd flip-flops. Doubly so if said garden is criss-crossed with thorny bramble bushes and stinging nettles. >.<
(Although also, oddly kinda exhilarating...at least until I slipped out of my sandals and had trouble getting them back on, while stepping barefoot in the thick snow... XD). Stupid, but fun. ^_^;;;

None of them are. In fact, that they're wearing such uniforms for what they're doing is not very sensible. I think that's part of the appeal--in the source material, the (human) scouts were constantly blundering into deep mud and quicksand. Rule one of this group is "always wear your beret--it's how we'll find you if you sink too deep".
