There's always the philosophy of making a few copies and almost "test run" a technique against one of those first before applying it to the real motif. Colouring directly on the original can be a very good thing though... it makes you treat the whole thing quite differently, sort've dividing you between the "preciousness" and the "master of my own destiny" motif.

Aim for total destiny domination! It's the most rewarding goal.
And indeed, foxes can be thinky!
But all kidding aside, working with physical media can be totally rewarding, and sometimes the best thing you can do is muck something up a bit (rather intentionally or not)... because then comes the part of figuring out how to fix it! It may seem frustrating at the time, but you can encounter many a happy accident along the way.
