It is a true shame, for this plane would have made Canada an elite fight plane manufacturing country, and would had put us up next to U.S. and Russia.
But the U.S. didn't want that and force the Canadian government to scrap it, then NASA hired all of the AVRO ARROW team to help them build the first successful space launch.

The americans have a nasty habit of trying to keep neighbouring allies weak. They denied South Korea tanks and planes. However, when the N. Koreans attacked, the south koreans, whose only AT weapons were M9 bazookas, simply couldn't stop the NK T-34's. And US M24 Chaffees did not fare any better.
I would say it would be less about keeping allies weak and more about defense dollars (at the time, anyway). This plane would have been good at intercepting long range (Soviet) bombers and that's about it - if the US was really concerned about air superiority, they could have easily overwhelmed these things with numbers of, say, F-4 Phantoms. But they wouldn't have been, since we're best buddies! Ultimately, the blame rests with the Canadian government for pulling the plug on the project.
Fun to think about. I've seen the replica at the Downsview museum - this thing is a MONSTER, it's huge!
