"If you don't count the Forest as a deity then I'm not religious, but I've nothing against the conventional gods and I see no harm in having them on my side. Besides, I feel the need for a little bit of ceremony; I can't step into the pit as casually as onto a coach.
"I kneel, dry leaves crunching under my legs. I make a general salute to all the gods, and name in particular the gods who watch over trees, swamps, journeys and transformations. I tell them I'm about to sink in quicksand and be eaten by a forest, and that I'd very much appreciate it if they kept a friendly eye on the forest and me both.
"I've never ever offered a formal prayer to the Forest. That would have been like calling your lover 'Sir'".
