And we finally get to see what all is the deal with the scan-sweep. And more importantly an introduction to the Undernetwork. It's not really something that becomes super relevant to any of the plots as far as I know, but it is a setting that a lot of scenes take place in over the course of the story, so it needed to be developed. As well as show that the engineering staff are doing more than just make weapons.

And for the record, how the Undernetwork translates for people is functionally identical to the Language of Intent devices. It just adds an extra step to not be considered anywhere nearly as intrusive. Even though it's not being experienced as such, all the information being shown and transmitted by the pods is being translated to and from a data stream. I'd like to remind people that a lot of Con magic is actually technology mimicking other forms of magic or other abilities. The Language of Intent devices are using magic (in that they use phasic energy) but are 100% technology. The way it works is that it taps into the mind of everyone in range and temporarily rewrites the language center of the brain to a language that seems like gibberish but conveys everything they want to say. And since everyone's language center is translated to the same gibberish, they understand each other perfectly. How the Undernetwork handles it is that you make an intent to speak, the pod will take those and translate those into the data equivalent to the language of intent, then transmit that data. Then when the others hear it that data will be translated back into their language on their end.
