Vek'Tor [Sketchpage]
Disclaimer: No, this is not Subnautica fanart nor is it a fan character. Please stop comparing and read the description...
Initially, my partner xenomorph-evil and I desired to create a character that would fill an important spot in our lore. It had to be a character that is neither creature nor machine. It had to be something we both enjoy thoroughly without us growing tired of it as we did with other characters. Instead of making it a physical Architect (from my lore), we went a route that we haven't done nor tried before. An abstract alien taur. At first, it was my call in the middle of creating another design because I felt that something was missing, something we both could enjoy for the sake of the entity having a true companion and in the end, love. Someone that is more than just a literal pet with almost no communication whatsoever. We simply desire to see some chemistry happen between our characters without it being a one-sided relationship so we can properly fantasize about interactions in the lore. It is rare that a character ever truly feels 'alive' in a sense, and this one is a very good start for something permanent.
Now, we both weren't sure what exact route we should take but I had the precursor of Subnautica stuck in my head for a while because the aesthetics were too similar to what I love the most. It's a design that really got to me because, in the middle of developing my lore, an architect-esque being appeared in a game out of nowhere and left me thinking for a while. It's... more or less a coincidence that my ideas for the architects' design were so similar to Subnautica's one. We didn't want this character to look too much like Alan since we both really liked the design they gave the precursor, and nor did we desire to copy the design. I gave my best to make it loveable to us and different from what people like comparing it to.
We both enjoy aquatic creatures, robots with visors, abstract designs, and cosmic/deep-sea colors... so this is what came out of it.
Vek'Tor is (in short) a biomechanical being from another universe. He got stranded after a portal failure took place and was then left to live in our universe with what was given to him. It wasn't long until the entity took notice of his presence, out of the blue. At first, Mirage did not know what he was or whether the similarity to the physical old ones played a role - thinking of him as an outcast - but Mirage quickly came to understand that what they found was forbidden to exist, if it wasn't for them being hunted by the cult. It took them a while to get along, especially because Mirage was only out for his exotic elements and protecting him from being noticed by the Architects themselves. Vek'Tor thought of Mirage as a rather primitive creature - but time and enough training did wonders. Although he will remain their most precious artifact, Mirage takes good care of him and Vek'Tor does the same for them. Now that Mirage opened his "eyes", he is convinced that this universe isn't as bad and hostile as he thought. He however prefers staying within Mirage's protection as things can get rather rough when you're the carrier of elements that could annihilate... a lot - counting to both of them.
In the future, we thought of Vek'Tor being the secondary key to creating a functional portal to other universes in connection to my mate's machine lore... but that is still far ahead.

Oh! So I was pretty close when I said they reminded me of AL-AN. I think it's pretty cool that the visual ideas happened to emerge in two separate places mostly unrelated to each other. I really enjoy the differences between the two designs, and how they feel more like convergent design than any sort of copying. When building a car, you find four wheels are betted than three or five. When designing a biomechanical being, this is apparently just the way you go. ::3
