Back in ancient times, we used to share music via curious devices called "cassette tapes." Many years ago, I put together an audio tape anthology of my favorite science fiction-themed rock 'n' roll songs. To accompany the cassette, I included this illustrated song guide.
In later years, I periodically "broadcast" this same anthology in mp3 format via shoutcast. Check http://www.rootoon.com/media for the current status of my internet stations (I'm currently featuring a Rock 'n' ROll XMAS show)

Little girls call them the diamond dogs.
Sadly, almost none of these is familiar. The only "Diamond Dogs" I know of is from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, and that seems in no way sci-fi themed. But, I just love the name "Fabulous Poodles" (For obvious reasons) and I am stupidly in love with "Space Oddity." Sometimes, for no reason at all, I get this uncontrollable urge to say "Ground Control to Major Tom."

"Diamond Dogs" is the title song of a 1974 LP by Bowie. It was a concept album based on George Orwell's 1984. Most of the songs have a distopian, sci-fi theme to them, like "Diamond Dogs":

The Fabulous Poodles song is also absolutely wonderful from this great, late-70s band. Stop by the link, above sometime as I'm likely run my "Sci-Fi Rock 'n' Roll" show sometime in the next few months (the show has more songs and some funny interstitials that aren't listed in this drawing). I may even format that and my XMAS show as podcasts.
So, as they say on the radio, "stay tuned."

Ahh, "Fred vom Jupiter, der Traum aller Frau'n Du machst mich schwach.". :) There even was a music video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpN5MgZHGIQ
I have actually seen the video first. It was on the German version of VH-1 a long time ago.
His other works are also quite amazing.
I like the lyrics of Satellit. "Ihn nicht hören, ihn nicht sehen, ihm nur vertrauen, ihm verstehen. Doch der Mensch der sieht nur Sterne, sieht nur Sterne aus der Ferne." (Not hearing it, not seeing it, only trusting it, understanding it. But man only sees stars, sees stars from far away). I think it's a great image for the cold war. You somewhere have a satellite out there we all must trust to tell us when evil comes. This was also the time of the Starwars defence system.

The covers also satirice common covers of mainstream music.
Later this brought about strange stuff like Bavarian language country music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCT6DHqrCRk (I am a Bavarian Cowgirl)

Say, have you included this one in your current Xmas mix?

You could replace "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" by Loose Seatsprings (I DESPISE that cut)...

Springsteen fans seem to hate that cover of "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town." However, I was never a big Springsteen fan, and I rather like the song, both the performance and the "bootleg quality" of the recording. It went unreleased for years and was only available via boots (or off the radio, which is where I recorded my copy).
One of my favorite Springsteen parodies is "Bedrock Anthem" c/w "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" by that prehistoric rocker, Bruce Springstone. :)

For further listening might I suggest.
