Christchurch tram "178" operating on the Christchurch City tram loop in 2022, running through the pedestrianised Oxford Terrace area next to the Avon River.
178 was built in Christchurch in 1922, one of 25 trams of her class that were designed to run as multiple units by a single motorman. She has been operating on the Christchurch City Tramway since its opening in 1995. When the 7.8 Christchurch Earthquake struck on 22 February 2011, 178 was departing Cathedral Square at the moment the earthquake struck. Despite buildings falling all around her she remained undamaged, but she was trapped where she had stopped for 17 days due to quake damage to her surroundings.
(Source: "Trams Still Around New Zealand", Graham Stewart. The book contains a remarkable photo of 178 being shrouded in dust from the collapsing Christchurch Cathedral bell tower at the moment the quake struck!)
