This drawing is inspired by the anthro MLP setting where Patreon patron Spypone's OC Skyfall operates as part of Princess Luna's own security detail. Link
Princess Luna inserted a reloaded magazine into the grip of the massive semi-automatic pistol. Cycling the action she raised the pistol and started to take aim, but then paused and lowered the weapon. Remembering the first magazine she'd fired from the behemoth pistol her horn flared and small force wall appeared in front of her face. Once again she raised the weapon and pressed trigger.
The pistol roared and rocked in her hand as it sent a 11.45mm projectile rocketing downrange. The alicorn was very happy she'd remembered to erect the force wall as she watched the spent brass casing bounce of it instead of her face. The first time she'd fired it several of the spent casings had struck her.
The giant pistol thundered 7 times and then went silent. Calm returned to firing range. Removing the now spent magazine and confirming the chamber was empty Luna set the still smoking pistol down on a bench and looked over at the pony who was creator of this monstrous mechanical creation. The stallion anxiously smiled as he addressed the princess.
"So your highness! What is your opinion? Would you consider the possibility of your security forces adopting it? Yes it is a rather large pistol, but with a shoulder stock attached the pistol can also operate as a small semi automatic carbine. So it is multi-purpose system, and 11.45mm cartridge is without equal at this time!"
The Prussian Blue alicorn looked back at the pistol on the bench and then over to it's creator. She arched an eyebrow as she spoke.
"The problem I see sir. Is that I haven't test-fired a very large pistol today, but instead a very small field gun. The weapon is large to the point of encumbrance. It fires an excessively powerful cartridge for the job. It has more parts than my pocket watch. Even worse it has an alarming tendency of hurling spent cartridge casing into face of the operator with great gusto."
At this moment Luna glanced down and noticed there was a spent cartridge casing lodged down in the cleavage of her breasts. Reestablishing eye contact with the stallion, the mare casually reached in with one hand and extracted the wayward piece of brass. She then flicked it away.
The stallion swallowed and looked the princess eyes. "So, um. That's a no."
Note. The pistol in this drawing is a Gabbett-Fairfax Mars pistol. They were a series of early 20th century pistols. The Gabbett-Fairfax Mars, not to be mistaken with several other pistols from other period manufacturers that were also called Mars, never went into proper manufacturing. Instead the Mars were a series of unique, handmade, prototypes. Each one slightly different from its brethren with a wide range of features, calibers, sights and barrel lengths.

Hear, hear.
It can be so frustrating to have to deal with a lot of swagger, charged editorializing about gun control, or 'let's see how it looks when we blast away at crap with this' when what I'm really interested in is the weapon as a piece of technology, craftsmanship and history.
Well-- art too, after a fashion. But that doesn't get served any better by somebody seeing how many feet of block Velveeta it takes to stop a bullet.

That Luna has created an energy shield in front of her face to block any unloaded cartridges heading towards her is a very nice touch, which also looks very cool by the way. In addition, the mini-story that is in the description is something that is also very appreciated as well. And finally, I must say that Luna still looks great here; great work.
I thought it was a Mars pistol. Happy to see that I was correct in this assumption. Seeing the action open like that is an over-engineered thing of beauty.
This reminds me of a concept I had a for a Roan scenario. The party happens upon a travelling gun designer loosely based on Gabbet-Fairfax and Savage who had her prototype pistols stolen by a group of bandits and their mission is to retrieve them. As each pistol is a unique prototype, they have their own set of advantages and disadvantages, which makes for an interesting choice for the party when they get to keep one as a reward.

I feel like the only reason she's not horrible burned from a piping hot casing in her bosom is because of her demigod status as an alicorn. XD A lesser mare would have been doing a very funny dance after getting up close and personal with one!
But yeah, I could see that as a reason they weren't put into production. =P Not ideal to pelt the user with hot brass when firing.

Oh, I dunno. Glock's designs have a nasty habit of launching brass every which way, including back at their user. And they're some of the most popular handguns on the planet.
My personal experience is that it's entirely possible to keep your cool (and keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction), even after a Glock 17-launched 9mm case lands between your eyelid and your shooting glasses. Granted, it didn't stay there very long, but I'd wager that's equally painful to getting a casing down your cleavage.
As far as the burns go, it could possibly leave a permanent mark. But most likely the worst she'd get is a small second-degree burn depending on how long it sat there. Painful, absolutely. But no permanent damage.

I think you missed my point. =P When re-reading the text, I saw that Luna actually didn't notice the spent brass at all until she glanced down at it.
She didn't feel the heat at all, if there was any. So, I think my point stands: she didn't feel a hot piece of brass lodged in her cleavage - which was discovered long after she'd stopped firing - despite it presumably being in close contact with her skin or fur.
Please tell me who's had personal experience like that in the real world. I'll wait.

I was holding a fully-heated soldering iron by woking end for about seven seconds before realizing it's hot.
But smooth-skin critters are cheaters. We have some fire\heat protection on surface, some of doubling as electrical insulator (skin about ten times more resitant than any fur wearer). Technically fur is first to go otherwise.

So... it's weird, but it sounds like you're both disproving and proving my point. Or just shooting down one argument of mine and giving me another. Because if her having fur would make her less resistant to heat, would she not have felt it sooner?
Also, your example involves the hands, which I think are a bit more heat resistant than breasts, or the chest area in general, so I'm not sure if it's a fair comparison. I feel like a more fair one would be finding out how many people have had a hot, spent round slip inside their shirt and be held against their chest for more than a few seconds, and see how they react, or if they notice. Which I think they would, if their pain nerves function. =P
Also, also: I feel a bit silly arguing about this now because ultimately it's up to the artist/writer of this piece to determine what's canon to Princess Luna and her abilities. So, if he wants to make her a little more durable due to her alicorn nature, then I win the argument, for what little that's worth. He could go your way, though that'd make her badass in another sense, having not really paid attention to the heat of the brass until she glanced down and saw it in her cleavage.
I just know what makes sense to me given what I know of the show and her actions in the prose we're given. And so far, nothing you've said really has convinced me to give up my own interpretation. So, not really sure where to go from here.
If you've got something better, feel free to present it now. Otherwise, I'm not sure this conversation is worth continuing. I ain't budging without a good reason, and you've yet to give one. Your move, I guess.

More like disporving. You can find yourself in situation whre you would ignore minor pain due to some circumstances.
Soldering iron gives great amount of heat constantly. It had steel cover and was a 25 Wt one. Its tempearture was above 300C - 573K
n\rass from the shot is comparatively not very hot - 330-360K on average after 1 millisecnd on fire, and only one end is hottest (the muzzle end). The lowmost temp is 9mm cartridge, .50 pistol round is 360K. That's just 60-90C, it's hot. I did't found have data for .50 BMG, but it cannot be much hotter or weapon would be unsafe to fire - effect of of ammo cooking would be there.
It's scalding hot. It's not burning hot. Brass flies heavy end forward, but them tumbles some.. Brass cools off at first very fast, about 1 degree per 10 millisecond, but it stays hot for a short while - longs than steel and much longer than aluminium cases.
There is one counterpoint:
Brass temperature is below boiling point. And then we have additional protection EVERYWHERE. Too hot item touches skin and steam creates insulator between skin and heated item. As I was grabbing iron, that wasn't the case, but a glancing touch might be less damaging.
Fur creatures do not have this type of heat protection but their fur would be singed at first adn it can withstand over 200C

Why didn't you start the argument with that then? If you'd simply pointed out the facts that might've swayed me. Though I'm more used to Fahrenheit than Celsius, I know that 90C is close to the boiling point of water, so it's pretty hot, but that's also the high end of the scale.
Really, all we need to establish is how hot the brass is when it landed in her bust, and whether someone with fur in a sensitive area like that would feel it right away or not. Even then, it doesn't mean she couldn't handle higher heat due to her demi-god status (or whatever you wanna call it), just that it wasn't the reason for her having missed the spent cartridge.
But at that point, we'd have to get Word of God from Baron, since this is his universe/AU/dreamscape, so there's not much to go on, unless we go by the canon of the show, which I'm not sure has enough data to work with.
I guess I'm just unwilling to let go of the Princesses being so powerful they might not even notice certain things. =P The fact that a far less powerful person might not notice it either doesn't make me wanna let it go. Just means I wanna up the stakes to see what the demi-god can handle that most folks can't.

Best solution is to make sure the brass goes out the side instead of the top, like with a 1911. But common sense apparently has no place in weapon design. Or in the purchasing decisions of weapon buyers.
As far as complexity, I wouldn't exactly call a long-recoil rotating bolt action "simple." The trigger mechanism is probably the least complicated part.
Oh! And speaking of the 1911, let's not forget that Browning was working on the short-recoil tilting-barrel platform that would eventually become it at about the same time as the Mars was in production. One wonders what Luna would think about that.
I'm not sure even the engineers that designed it fully understand how the G11 works. XD

Nah, that's fine if you have theoretical mechanics specialsist in team.
There is an comparable specialist assault rifle made by Russians which was designed to fire two round per shot. Through one barrel. Essentially a dual loading mechanism working scarily similar to G11 biut without that rotating wheel part. And thing won competiton from dual-barrel one and went into production. Not, it's a specialist rifle, not meant for common troops - AN-94.
