Historically, jesters were entertainers during the medieval and Renaissance periods, frequently (but not always) employed as part of the households of kings and nobles.
Harlequin (from Italian Arlecchino) is a stock character of the Italian commedia dell'arte (traditional form of popular theatre), normally depicted in a checkered outfit and characterised as a witty, resourceful and astute servant character.
Although both archetypes are still around in their traditional forms, their style and aesthetics went on to influence the modern concept of comedic characters in general.
