Is his clothing studded, or is it more of an ornamentation, like sequins almost? Given your description of the context, I'd figure this armor was more for show than actual combat, but I'm by no means a major expert on armor, and I understand some cultures/times generally wore fairly light stuff.
Whatever the case, it's nice, with a little comical touch. :3
