Sonika demonstrating that lions sometimes do something other than sleep!
Sonika was born at the Cotswold Wildlife Park and moved to Bristol Zoo in May 2019.
Photo taken on my visit in March 2020, shortly before the covid lockdowns which have hastened the closure of the historic Bristol Zoo, Clifton site.
The Asiatic lion has unfortunately been declared the most endangered large cat species in the world and Bristol Zoo has been contributing to the European captive breeding programme for many years. The intent is to maintain a health and genetically diverse population away from the lions' native domain to protect against any loss of the wild population.
Sahee and Sonika's contributions will likely be a little delayed by the closure of their current Clifton home and relocation to the zoos' new out-of-town site.
