After I uploaded this, Vlooi asked for a commission showing how it works, featuring their dragon Alastago.
A ring bit is an excellent choice for strong, unruly, or otherwise difficult-to-handle dragons. It is one of the few bit types safe enough to be worn without a muzzle or a noseband. The bit rests horiontally in the dragon's mouth (fig. A) if and only if the reins are loose.
When the rider pulls on the reins (fig. B), pressure is applied through the mouthpiece on the tongue and the bars of the mouth while the port digs into the palate. The ring prevents the bit from moving and exerts pressure on the lower jaw.
A close-up of the bit (fig. C) shows its main features: a thin high spade-type port with a ring attached to its tip. It may also be used to effortlessly lead the beast in-hand; if it's pulled downwards, both the ring and the port apply pressure into the back part of the tongue. Rollers are optional but generally recommended, as they prevent the dragon from escaping leverage action by holding the bit between its teeth. Their ribbed surface also increases the effectiveness of the mouthpiece.
Note: I do not support or approve of IRL horse driving, riding, or any other speciesist bullshit... You know the drill. This sort of bit is very much a real thing (that version doesn't have rollers, but other curb bits may have them).

I understand you don`t like real horse riding but why are you drawing pictures like this with animal (dragon) cruelty?
i believe that humans and animals can be great friends and even ride together. Of course not with bits like this. But its not only black and white. I´m proud to be a riding animal myself, because I know there are humans like me who really love their animals and wouldn`t harm them in any way.

I draw pictures featuring animal cruelty mainly because I DO have a kink for animal cruelty. And, like any somewhat civilized Homo sapiens, I'm firmly of the opinion that some kinks should be left entirely in the realm of artwork, writing, and fantasy.
But when it comes to how stuff works in real life, any "training device" that works through "applying pressure" is aversive, that is, force-based, whether it's a bridle, a collar, or whatever bullshit. Guess what, if such exerted force felt okay, the animal wouldn't be moving away from it.
If you can't control your pet without resorting to violence then maybe you shouldn't have a pet to begin with.

But force-based applying pressure is not always violence. There is a difference. Or would it be violence if I would hug you for exempel? Of course not, its a form of communication without words.
Of course I want something from the animal, it has to do some light "work" for all the expensive food and stuff which it gets from me. But this is no cruelity or slavery, its the nature of life. You can`t survive without doing anything. Wild nature is much more brutal and deadlier. I think its a really great opportunity if animals and humans can work together with better lifes for both.
Of course there will be always stupid humans too who only hurt them but the best we can do ist doing it better. Because there is no alternative earth without humans where they can live alone.
And I understand your "kink" but wouldn`t be nice to think about it like you want to tease a naughty dragon? Let him work for you as a mount, maybe he likes it, maybe not but he needs to because of money, culture reasons or a lost bet.
I think if you would think less bad about riding in general, it would be much more fun to play with them in fantasy too. Every rider is different, every ride can be a different experience. I think dragon mounts are great for war. But what about a public dressage show? Or let him pull a pretty carriage with other free dragons who are watching him. Will the dragon like it? Maybe not but its no violent cruelty. I would save this for the very bad ones if you really need it.

It wouldn't necessarily be violence but it would be wrong if it was done without my consent. As it most certainly would, since I do not wish to be hugged by anyone who promotes human superiority. It is perfectly possible for a non-human animal to be "employed" in a way that relies on their natural behavior, examples: guard dog that barks at strangers, cat as pest control, grazing sheep used to prevent ecosystem succession. What natural instincts does forcing a horse to do work use, except the instinct to avoid pain and discomfort? Saying that exploiting an animal is okay because life in the wild may be more cruel is like saying that being a slave is better than being a beggar. Maybe it is better for someone, maybe it isn't. The issue is that one of these options includes being forced to work without consent.
We're talking about animal abuse IRL so don't bring fantasy into this. In my artwork, I don't care what the victim feels, all that matters is that it has to do its job or endure whatever happens, no one is asking for its consent. Whatever happens, no matter if it's slavery or punishment or rape or whatnot. Because this is the sort of stuff I enjoy drawing. BUT the thing is - it's all in imagination. In real life, you need consent of all involved parties. If you want to hug a friend, if you want to pet a dog, if you want to pick up a rat or a kitten, doesn't matter. Otherwise it's wrong.
I won't have anyone advocating for speciesism here. Get out or you'll end up blocked.

You don`t know what I`m doing for this animals and all my work for animal welfare in general. I´m really not promoting human superiority here. But sure I have to abuse them because there is only black and white in your small world.
Really sad because I liked your pictures but maybe its better to leave and watch other artists.

What am I supposed to say, that it's nice that you are better than a great many other horse keepers? That doesn't make putting horses to work any more consensual and any less wrong.
In all honesty, I'd much rather have my own small world where humans don't take advantage of other species than to live in this cursed reality.
Yeah, I think that might be better for both of us.
