This is L&N 0-8-0 #285. She was sold to the Republic Steel Corporation before the L&N's sudden purge of steam power
(they scapped EVERYTHING except #152 in a week) in the 1950's. Thus she was saved from the scrappers torch and later found her way into the hands of KRM. She is one of only three L&N engines left. Those include #285, #152, and a another 0-8-0 on park display somewhere in Georgia.
Some people count "The General" as an L&N engine since they ran her in the 1960's but I personally don't count it.

The L&N was a road that did major infastructure improvements system wide in short order. While the L&N was steadily dieselizing the fleet since the late fortys, there was still a sizeable number on the steam roster in the early fiftys. However, when word came down from Louisville that steam was done they meant done and while it took awhile to physically scrap the engines they basically went from having an operating steam roster on a Monday to having everything blown down and stored on the scrap lines on Friday.
In fact the C&O and N&W sent engines to L&N shop complexes to be cut up when they gave up steam as well. This is actually how C&O #614 was saved oddly enough becuase they got so backed up in the scrapped process that she was still sitting complete on the deadline at Ravenna, KY as late as 1970! Then Ross Rowland came sniffing around for power for the Freedom Train and she was saved.
