I swear, this is exactly like a character for a story I made years ago!
Except him using a yo-yo doubled as a melee weapon and a concentration tool for casting spells. And the "string" was an electro-magnetic connection between his gloves and the yo-yo; a flick away extended away and a flick inwards brought it back.
Boy, you really brought back memories with this picture! I really should think about finishing that story.
