Why is it that I am so fascinated with reptiles? This is a question I have attempted to answer in short for years. All I've really been able to say is that they are simply one of my favorite animals. I have had more reptile themed memorabilia than any other kind. But more intriguing, I have more reptilian characters than any other fantasy type.
There is something about reptilian creatures that draws the eye. Perhaps it is their scales, which come in a stunning array of beautiful colors and patterns. Perhaps it is that sense of something ancient about them, stark reminders that colossal reptilian creatures once ruled this earth by tooth and claw. I will admit reptiles do not make the most exciting pets, being speechless (hissing aside) and prone to moving little. Some might argue that this is a great feature, making them low stress pets. The question was once posed to me as to why I would want a pet snake as they do not do anything in particular. It is my opinion that one has to be willing and able to enjoy owning a companion that is simply there, not hoping for any return from the pet.
As for memorabilia, that much can easily be explained. I like reptiles, I think they look cool so naturally I would enjoy things with my fascination upon them. The symbolism of reptiles that come to mind are a second motivation. Reptiles have long represented patience, wisdom, and longevity. All of these things are qualities I seek for myself and admire in others. Reptiles are hardy creatures that can endure a lot, something I believe is necessary to succeed in life.
With all of this in mind, it's no small wonder that I have so many reptilian fantasy characters (six different ones as of current date) or favorites in media. Bowser from the Mario series, for example, is one of my favorite reptiles having both an amusing and fearsome personality as well as coming back from defeat countless times. Another is Aeon Calcos "Lizardman" from Soul Calibur, a man cursed and forsaken by his deity. Rather than give up, he sets upon a quest for personal redemption. As to why I myself have so many characters with reptilian features, it should be no small wonder I wish to project such admirable qualities upon my fantasy setting characters.
So in closing, there are indeed valid reasons for my fixation. From their mysterious heritage, to their beautiful appearance. The qualities they represent no human should be without, in my opinion. All in all, they seem damn cool so why not include them into imagination and fantasy? Perhaps I am merely bad at resisting temptation!
