Some have cast Knuckles as Vegeta in the past, but this is due more to Vegeta's prominence in comparison to Piccolo in "Z" than because the characters necessarily match, IMO. Piccolo is a better fit for Knuckles, as you still get the rival-turned-friend thing but with more similar personality types. Plus, the echidnas match up nicely with the Namekians, hence two of Archie's most prominent echidna characters taking on the roles of Piccolo's alter egos.
Knuckles = Piccolo
Athair = Kami
Dimitri = Piccolo Daimao
