Was the resolution higher than 1280 in any axis?
If so, then the reason it won't play is because it got re-sized as a jpeg.
To fix it, you can select 'change submission file' beneath the image, and re-select the gif. Once you do this, it will re-upload the image, but without downsizing it and turning it into a jpeg.
