Like the Gibson Firebird that this mandolin was modeled after, the Epiphone Mandobird IV has the signature reversed headstock. The parallel lines of the nickel steel strings provide a nice contrast to the painted black finish of the headstock.

I agree with what our friend Dai said above, and I respectfully disagree with the great songwriter Paul Simon. Sometimes things look best in black and white ;)
I once had an Epiphone Thunderbird bass with a headstock like this one, but three times larger at least.
The thing about the old reverse Firebirds is that they're bottom-heavy; if you're wearing a reverse on a strap on your shoulder and you let go of the guitar with both hands, the body swings toward the floor and the headstock swings up to clobber the side of your head.
The first time that I let go of that T-Bird bass with both hands was the last: I saw entire constellations when that headstock met the side of my head...oooff!
At least this cool mando's headstock shouldn't present much of a threat...after all, how close to your head is this going to reach? ;)
