I always figured that was the case - since with most creatures that have whiskers, you don't always see them unless the light hits them just right. Or if there was something else to indicate that they are there - such as say, on a wolf's face. (And even then, at a glance you won't notice the whiskers on a wolf unless they're close to you.)
