I wonder...when did prison rape become joke fodder? What makes it so much funnier than "regular" rape? Y'know, the crime next door to murder? To me, holding someone down and violating their orifices is never funny, but I guess I'm just an old prude....

It's funny because it's funny when rape happens to men. *Shrugs* don't know why, but it is a double standard.
Man yells at his wife - abusive
Woman yells at her husband - assertive
boy forcing a girl to go out with him - evil
girl forcing a boy to go out with her - crafty
Man raping woman - evil
Woman raping man - he's probably enjoying it
People need to stop thinking any kind of abuse is funny.
But, unfortunately ... it often is.
But that's only when you know both sides, and know it's o.k.
I mean, how often have you seen one friend hit another?
but, again ... if it's a guy friend constantly hitting a girl, he's abusive.
If it's a girl friend constantly hitting a guy friend, she's just being one of the guys ...
I guess it's because men are naturally more aggressive, and are aggressive towards each other, but often in a friendly sort of manner.

Most of them are guilty. Not all, but most.
If we made them work like we used to(to death), I'd really feel bad. But prison doesn't suck so much anymore. They have TV, drugs, cigarettes, cell phones, computer access, gymnasiums, ball courts, all-inclusive healthcare...
The only part of prison people are scared of anymore is rape. I see way to many tractors cutting the shoulders of the highways and not enough orange jumpsuits with whim-whams.

You must be referring to a cushy federal minimum security prison. I haven't been to prison, but when put in holding in the Oklahoma County jail my cell phone and wallet were confiscated and I was never given access to a gymnasium, computer, or anything, and there was one communal TV with plastic around it and a speaker, so you could barely make out what it said over the ruckus of the other prisoners.
Their all-inclusive "healthcare" also failed to give me vital medication due to my being out of my cell when they arrived, and refusing to come back because they didn't want to double-dose me even though they hadn't given me my first dose. This meant I suffered withdrawals from it, worsening my already stress-filled and sleepless 48-hour stay.
Granted I seem to recall being able to eventually earn enough money to buy minor things like a Walkman™ radio or tiny TV, if I'd been in and worked long enough. But that's small comfort, really.
So no, there wasn't anything pleasant or tolerable about jail. While the higher-security prisons do often feature outdoor gyms and ball courts, the culture there means you have to join some gang or another in order to use any of them, which presents it's own problems. People that go into prison for long periods soon suffer the same problem that anyone in confinement does: They forget how to live on the outside, and the culture shock of returning to normal life, getting a place to live and making a living wage (only worsened by the stigma of a conviction and no felonies/no criminal record requirements of more and more employers) overwhelms them, often turning them back to crime, which is only bolstered by the criminal training and contacts they get from others when incarcerated.

Yes, it's really quite disgusting. There's a not-for-profit group that wants to stop prison rape, but they're not taken seriously at all by the prisons. What sickens me is that prison guards not only turn their heads but often have the same attitude: "Bastards deserve it." There's also a lot of crazy racism and homophobia among prison guards, I've found, which only reinforces that awful belief.
Kudos for the motto of the "Faltown Flyer". I'm not surprised the gorilla worker got some press and face time as well. He had lines before.
Bonus Multiplier: the semi-accurate "artist's impression" pic. You can't have a mystery-man story without one of those on the front page.
"1992"? This story really that old?

Prison rape jokes are an example of the deep sickness in America's penal system. In no other country except the most evil are prisoners of the law subject to such despicable actions. Don't even get me started on Gitmo or the Iraqi prisons or our sekrit bases in third-world countries that allow Americans to subject people to torture and bypass the Constitution by the letter of the law.
There once was an anti-piracy ad campain in Germany that wanted to scare copyright thiefs by telling them that they would be raped in prision. It somehow vanished, maybe because more and more people critizied, that this ad was in fact a threat - and could be punished with jail, too.
But somehow it was the only funny spot in that campain.
If you browse through media, you'll probably notice, that homosexual rape of adult males - not only prison rape - is often used as a "stylistic device" in contemporary media. Hell knows why.

I can't remember whether it was on TV at all, maybe it was only in cinemas. And there where posters.
