I was trying to re-arrange the sounds of the original game version, using a free MIDI file and a Mega Drive / Genesis Soundfont, giving the song back his original FM-synth sound of the amazing Soundchip inside the console.
And here is the result. Hope ya like it. I was trying to come as close as possible using this method without using any softsynths or external hardware. Yes, it is not very creative. It is just an experiment.

well read the description. Letting it sound like the original (as close as possible) was intented. I was curious if it would be possible only using a MIDI and a Soundfont. And by the way, the original has much more vibrato modulation in the sounds compared to my "emulation" which makes a huge difference.
Yeah i know that VSTi. I spent a lot of time with that one but the interface is just horrible... but aren't all FM-Synths that way? :P
Belive it or not, i was kinda experimenting with VOPM last year, trying to re-do some tracks from the game Outrun. That was around the time when i wanted to dive into oldshool FM-synth stuff again, like the good old Adlib OPL2/OPL3 tunes.

In terms of interface and general functionality, yeah, it's pretty horrible. On the other hand, if you have a gigantic pack of voices from every Mega Drive song ever ripped to VGM like I do, you'll find it suddenly becomes a lot more useful. :D
I've thought about trying to backport OPM voices to FM7 or something, but it's something I'd have to do manually. Too bad. :\

well that's true :( The FM7 has a totally different way of Operator matrix which differs from the Mega Drive Soundchip. Although technicially it should be possible to emulate 4 Operators FM synthesis on a 6 Operators FM synth. But yeah, you have to do it all manually :(
When i started using VOPM i had no soundbanks for it. Only the few presets which all sounded the same. :P
I really should use it again and try some tweakings.

Just keep a look out on http://www.sonicretro.org/ and youtube for it, they keep teasing and promising it will be out by Christmas.
Holy shit. I had no idea! There's a lot coming up
I dun need to upgrade my games since i still own the original Cartridges and my Mega CD copy of "Sonic CD" with the japanese soundtrack that was also on the PAL version. I smell some kind of rip-off but at least Sega makes it possible for the people actually to buy the old games again if they want. Still..... Sega games belong to a Sega console, the way it should be. Even after all these years i am still under shock seeing Sonic and Mario in the same game.. on a Nintendo console... or Sonic on a $ony or Micro$oft console..
