Dieutale is an alternative version of Undertale with the caviote that everyone plays games to determine a winner, all of course with God-like abilities. All Rules are set in stone and it is often up to the challenged party to choose the game and whether or not to disclose the rules. The winner lives and the loser no longer lives...
Within this universe Papyrus has envisioned himself as a great commander with an amazing line of strategy. He believes that his unrealized potential is only a result of his incredible skill at resolving problems before the royal guard has a chance to notice... Unfortunately he isn't as up to the task as he thinks he is, and despite careful preparation and planning has never actually truly perfected the rules of his game, "Jumbled Trap Puzzle", yes I'm sure you read that correctly...
His scarf is a family heirloom, belonging to his mother a long time ago, past along to Sans and eventually to him. The scarf proportionally grows and shrinks based on the connection the person holding it has to it. In the case of papyrus himself it took on the size and shape of a commanders cape, matching his desire and commitment to become something more. His brother, in this universe, isn't nearly as cheerful and so has been more of a hurdle for Papyrus, as he appears much less capable of surviving, often times being a ghost in the background... Not literally. His rules are not concrete enough to be consistent and only really ever establishes the final rules when Frisk helps him out. Sans lets out a few smiles like the good ol' days when his brother is having genuine bouts of fun, often tossing a sarcastic pun in there for fun. Papyrus attempts to play his game, multiple times, often leaving various loopholes that Frisk employs to beat him in every attempt. After helping him along during his final engagement his rules are concrete enough to actually start employing the unfortunate pain his game causes. Seeing someone who was smiling and joking take genuine damage, seeing his game actually hurt someone... He will stop when Frisk gets a nasty near one hit kill hit from him.
His game, "Jumbled trap puzzle" is a game of tower defense where both sides look for words amidst random letters, carved into a wide surface, and must defend that word by whatever means necessary. Once chosen, the opponent must attack the word physically or magically by any means, but only with one wave of attacks (Meaning you can prepare an attack, taking a maximum of two minutes and then you must attack the word, The player defending uses this time to setup his/her means of preventing it. Note: Defenses can only be setup during the time window, and left alone once time is up). Once both sides have a turn defending and attacking, the winner of both rounds gets to strike an undefended opponent, (Note: If both players win one round each, then both players get to strike at each other, one for one). Refusing to attack and/or defend amounts to a loss of that round.
There is no way for Frisk to win this game once it's complete, because papyrus takes this game very seriously and thus uses attacks and defenses Frisk has no reasonable way of countering. He tosses bones, Sets up bone bunkers, freezes Frisk's ability to safely move and uses his magic to make snow Papyrus' which are as physically dense as they sound. Once he wins he is so excited that he conjures his special attack and nearly kills Frisk... Immediately he'll stop the game and ensure she's okay.
