Gradually, her tears abated, and Varan sat up on the bed. Using a corner of the bedclothes to dry her eyes she said to Vesan, “Thank you, lir renit. It – it felt good to cry.”
The admiral smiled as she too sat up. “It does help, and that’s what a friend is for, aka? Now, you need to make yourself presentable. I’m very pleased that you were drinking henal, and not skrivat or smiss.” Varan looked at her questioningly and k’Daridh said, “Henal doesn’t have enough alcohol in it to get you so drunk that you can’t come with me.”
“Come with you?”
“Yes. I am the commander of the cruiser division, and you are the commander of the patrol group that met the assault. You and I must visit your five subordinate captains and congratulate them on performing their duty well.”
“Gartabin h’Schen is, at last report, in the infirmary aboard one of the repair ships,” Varan said. “He was only lightly wounded.”
“Yes, I received his Command-Second’s report. You are to be commended, Varan.”
“Me?”
“Ulnt. You were not in command of a balanced force, and were heavily outnumbered. I will base my commendation on the fact that you withdrew in good order to Lalande’s defenses, and inflicted damage on the enemy formation until the assistance could arrive.” She huffed a sigh. “I will be conferring with Admiral Tajan. Future patrol groups will be more balanced, with destroyer escorts and a reaction force stationed permanently at Lalande. We must not let this happen again.” Her tail snaked around Varan’s shoulders and gave her an affectionate squeeze. “I am only sorry that the Terrans attacked while you were out here, in your first posting in a group command.”
“I still feel that there were areas I could have done differently.”
“Every commander feels that, Varan. I spent days after Xinjia thinking about how I could have gone about things. However, do you plan on learning from any errors you may have made?”
“Of course.”
“Then you will. Now, do you feel all right?”
Varan considered, and her tail draped across Vesan’s shoulders and hugged her. “Yes. Give me a few fractions to make myself presentable.”
“Tron muta’. I will be aboard my shuttle.”
