Secrets of the Sea... [LATE MERMAY PIECE]
Am I beyond late for Mermay? Yes. Am I, at least, showing up fashionably late for Mermay? Very much so, yes.
VAL IN FISHY FORM HAS OFFICIALLY RETURNED! Yes, you may refer to such as a return of the king (metaphorically obviously). This comes courtesy of
toks as part of a two-piece "mini-story." ...No, I won't be posting the second part of this story to my page, so if you wish to see the piece, check the artist's profile or my favorites 😉
And now... FOR THE LORE!
Val had been scouting a mostly uncharted and undocumented stretch of seabed for quite some time now. He had heard murmurs from the local merfolk of an unusual piece of plant-life growing in the area. Being quite the curious lad, Val wanted to see if these rumors were true and went off in search of this potentially-mysterious flora...
Once the merotter reached the location, he noticed that the landscape around him wasn't typical. Amongst the underwater cliffs and crevasses scattered here and there, Val saw some unusually round mounds in and around them. A more unusual note that he caught onto was that some of these mounds had a faint glow emanating from inside of them, which lead Val to conclude that they may be hollow inside. He had to investigate...
Val ventured further down to one of the mounds that were more exposed to the open waters surrounding him, and just as he had imagined, his hunch was right. These "mounds" were these grotto-sized geodes! All of the crystals surrounding the otter bared a fantastical glow, giving way to him seeing all of the plant-life found in and around this geode as well. It even shimmered and reflected off of the fish scales that formed his tail, which made the merotter feel even more astonished than before. It was as if these crystals were a natural source of light, but Val had a feeling, or rather tingle; a gut-feeling of sorts, that these geodes had a strong magical aura about them. It wasn't long into his investigation that Val spotted an immensely brighter light that stood out amongst all the others geodes he had been exploring. Val, in that moment, thinks he just found exactly what he came searching for...
It only took a matter of seconds for this agile merotter to dart to the opening of this geode, which at first didn't seem any different from those previous. However, Val had found the most beautiful treasure (in his opinion) that he had ever laid his eyes upon... A bright and shiny, golden water lily. It was surrounded in a body of algae on the bottom of the geode, as if it was formed in a tiny pool of water before the geode had become exposed to the sea around it. The fact that its insides remained intact from such an exposure felt like quite the miracle to Val. Even moreso once he could feel the immense increase in magical potency that this water lily had. Val had found magical relics and flora during plenty of his adventures, but none had a power quite like this flower of uncanny origins. He had a feeling of what this magical plant was capable of, but he had to experiment and modify it first. Val knew he had to take this water lily, so he carefully plucked it and started making the trek back home...
It was during this long swim that Val felt as if the magic within the flower had been growing stronger. The otter didn't feel any weaker himself, but it was as if the water lily was siphoning something from him. Perhaps, even, copying his magic... He then knew EXACTLY what this golden water lily was capable of. This revelation gave Val a soothing, yet content feeling, reassuring him that there were plenty of other secrets and magical goodies to be found within this grand space of ocean that surrounded him with a warm, loving embrace. However, in this case, it would be a short matter of time before he'd find a willing companion to test Val's theory for this newly-found flora of untapped magical capability...
