I think this whole argument originated between the 2000s - 2015s, where videogames would graphically improve every year.
Every game that was going for the most realistic graphics of their time would be outdone by the next. And so people started to make these comparisons.
Eventually polygon-counts increased literally beyond recognition and textures would become extremely high detailed. We've hit a ceiling.
Indie games gained in popularity, as the tools to create these became more accessible. And with the realistic details in major company titles maxed out, this argument rapidly fell flat. No new games look that much better than their previous entry.
With the full range of realism to explore and sufficient computing power, graphics are not about realism any more; they are a choice of style.

I miss the 90's. It was a truly magical time and it's a shame kids these days will never know what it was like seeing such rapid progress in a short time. Seeing Daytona USA in the arcade for the first time was, from a technical perspective, one of the most mind blowing moments of my life.
Today... eh, I just don't care anymore.
