It is a solemn duty, but it is one that must be done.
Here we see Recusant riding the line between the lands of the Second Life/Second Sea, the realm of the dead.
His duty is to guide souls lost in it's infinite dark waters to places of safety, islands in the dark, where they can live out their afterlife in peace.
In OWW, death is not an end. Souls will be sent to the place known as the Second Life, an infinite black ocean and shimmering sky. In the Second Life, souls have a chance to live a peaceful, second, life on one of many islands of sanctuary. These islands correspond to places of magical power (typically characterized by a giant magically charged crystal) in the realm of the living, and are molded by the desires and beliefs of the people who inhabit them. The crystals in this image represent how they appear in the living realm, and show a glimpse into their Second Life manifestations.
The Order of Keepers, also known as Keepers of the Dead, are a group of living individuals dedicated to making sure the souls of the dead find their way to these shining shores.
It is then their choice of when they wish to swim back into the sea, and let themselves be carried away in the currents, to let their current selves fade away and be carried back to the realm of the living to be reborn.
If someone dies in a particularly violent or traumatizing way however, they mutate into a mindless beast when they drown. At which point they then cross back into the world of the living to wreak havoc.
Keepers do their best to prevent this by acting as both ferrymen and counselors. Utilizing crystals of power, similar to those which form the greater islands, the Keepers essentially carry a small island with themselves wherever they go which they can catch souls with. To console their passengers, Keepers learn how to project their souls for a limited time to the Second Life to speak with them.
And on a minor note, for spirits, the Second Life is a physical place, which they can eat, drink, live and frolic in to their hearts content, presuming they find somewhere to rest.
